REGISTER TO VOTE

If registering for the first time in the state of Florida, complete the ONLINE REGISTRATION APPLICATION, AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED CLOSELY.  FAILURE TO FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN YOU NOT BEING REGISTERED.  Upon receipt of your application, and identification verification, a voter information card will be mailed to you.  If you have any questions, call our office at

You may also register to vote at one of our office locations or one of the NVRA agencies in Walton County.

Qualifications to register or vote:

(1)(a)  A person may become a registered voter only if that person:

1.  Is at least 18 years of age;
2.  Is a citizen of the United States;

3.  Is a legal resident of the State of Florida; 
4.  Is a legal resident of the county in which that person seeks to be registered; and
5.  Registers pursuant to the Florida Election Code.

(b)  A person who is otherwise qualified may preregister on or after that person's 16th birthday and may vote in any election occurring on or after that person's 18th birthday.

(2)  The following persons, who might be otherwise qualified, are not entitled to register or vote:

(a)  A person who has been adjudicated mentally incapacitated with respect to voting in this or any other state and who has not had his or her right to vote restored pursuant to law.

(b)  A person who has been convicted of any felony by any court of record and who has not had his or her right to vote restored pursuant to law.

(3)  A person who is not registered may not vote.

Oath upon registering: A person registering to vote must subscribe to the following oath: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Florida, that I am qualified to register as an elector under the Constitution and laws of the State of Florida, and that all information provided in this application is true."

The application:  A voter registration application is complete if it contains the following information necessary to establish the applicant's eligibility pursuant to s. 97.041, including:

1.  The applicant's name.
2.  The applicant's legal residence address.
3.  The applicant's date of birth.
4.  A mark in the checkbox affirming that the applicant is a citizen of the United States.
5.a.  The applicant's current and valid Florida driver's license number or the identification number from a Florida identification card issued under s. 322.051, or
   b.  If the applicant has not been issued a current and valid Florida driver's license or a Florida identification card, the last four digits of the applicant's social security number. In case an applicant has not been issued a current and valid Florida driver's license, Florida identification card, or social security number, the applicant shall affirm this fact in the manner prescribed in the uniform statewide voter registration application.
6.  A mark in the checkbox affirming that the applicant has not been convicted of a felony or that, if convicted, has had his or her civil rights restored.
7.  A mark in the checkbox affirming that the applicant has not been adjudicated mentally incapacitated with respect to voting or that, if so adjudicated, has had his or her right to vote restored.
8.  The original signature of the applicant swearing or affirming under the penalty for false swearing pursuant to s. 104.011 that the information contained in the registration application is true and subscribing to the oath required by s. 3, Art. VI of the State Constitution and s. 97.051.

*An applicant who fails to designate party affiliation must be registered without party affiliation. The supervisor must notify the voter by mail that the voter has been registered without party affiliation and that the voter may change party affiliation as provided in s. 97.1031.

Special Requirements for certain applicants:
If you are registering by mail, have never previously voted in the state, and have not been issued a current and valid Florida driver's license, Florida identification card, or social security number, please read F.S. 97.0535 before completing the application.

Registration books closed for an election:
The registration books must be closed on the 29th day before each election and must remain closed until after that election. If an election is called and there are fewer than 29 days before that election, the registration books must be closed immediately.

Closed Primary: Florida is a closed primary state.  If you wish to register to vote in a partisan primary election, you must be a registered voter in the party for which the primary is being held.  All registered voters, regardless of party affiliation, can vote on issues and non-partisan candidates. 

Notice: The office at which you register, or your decision not to register, your SSN, your FL DL #, and your FL ID # will remain confidential and will be used only for voter registration purposes. 

Notice: If the information on the application is not true, the applicant can be convicted of a felony of the third degree and fined up to $5000 and/or imprisoned for up to five years.

Voter information card: Upon verification by the department and completion of the registration process:

(1)  A voter information card shall be furnished by the supervisor to all registered voters residing in the supervisor's county. The card must contain:

(a)  Voter's registration number.
(b)  Date of registration.
(c)  Full name.
(d)  Party affiliation.
(e)  Date of birth.
(f)  Address of legal residence.
(g)  Precinct number.
(h)  Name of supervisor and contact information of supervisor.
(i)   Other information deemed necessary by the supervisor.

(2)  A voter may receive a replacement voter information card by providing a signed, written request for a replacement card to a voter registration official. Upon verification of registration, the supervisor shall issue the voter a duplicate card without charge.

(3)  In the case of a change of name, address, or party affiliation, the supervisor shall issue the voter a new voter information card.
